Happy 50th Birthday Sophie!

Sophie the Giraffe made in France by Vulli

Sophie will be exactly 50 years old on May 25, 2011 – St. Sophie’s Day.  She was created by Monsieur Rampeau, an expert in rotational molding of rubber.  The process of making Sophie to this day involves more than 14 manual steps.  Sophie is made from 100% natural rubber derived from the sap of the Hevea tree.

Sophie is a time tested toy and has sold over 30 million worldwide.  HappyBabyUSA recommends Sophie as a great teether toy with other benefits that stimulate all five senses – sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell.

Sophie is a great toy for the development of your baby.  On a personal note, my 8 month old son Justin has been enjoying Sophie from the day his teeth started to come out.  Along with the chewing, he loves to squeeze Sophie and hear her squeak.  Sophie is very light and babies will be able to grasp her easily.

(On a medical note, mothers and fathers with latex allergies should not buy this product for their babies since Sophie is made out of natural rubber.  Allergies is a controversial topic on why it occurs in some individuals and not in others.  There is a well known phrase that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” describes the nutrient benefits of the fruit.  However there are some, like myself, who are allergic to apples and therefore cannot eat them.  Sophie is a great teether toy with many developmental benefits to babies.  However, err on the side of caution should be used in parents with latex allergies.)

My baby boy loves Sophie. He eats each leg and head due to limited his mouth size. 🙂
